Tulsa, OK | December 26, 2017 – Entered for triple duty at the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout, Chris Cochran will be looking to collect his second-career Golden Driller this week. A noted non-wing ace, Cochran has established himself as one of the elite with his success from California to Illinois and his home state of Oklahoma. The 2013 Stock Non-Wing champion will battle in the Winged Outlaw, Outlaw Non-Wing and Stock Non-Wing divisions with three separate cars and three separate owners. With a trio of entries submitted, the McLoud, Oklahoma native will compete in Winged Outlaw with a Paul Albers owned No. 23C, he’ll run Outlaw Non-Wing in Tim Ottenbacher’s No. 32T, and race Stock Non-Wing in his own Concept Chassis No. 7C machine.
Attending the Shootout for the tenth consecutive year, Cochran has pieced together a beautiful resume that includes 11 feature starts, three top-five finishes, 12 heat race wins and one prestigious Golden Driller. Making his inaugural start in 2011, Cochran kicked his Shootout career off in style as he turned in a staggering 23rd-to-4th drive in Stock Non-Wing. Two years later at the 29th annual event, Cochran triumphed in the Stock Non-Wing class and claimed his first-career Golden Driller.
The 2014 event featured another hard charger award in Outlaw Non-Wing and a top-ten in the Stock division. His most recent moment of heroics at the Shootout came in 2016, when he nearly stole his second Golden Driller from fellow Oklahoma non-wing ace, Chris Andrews. Tracking him down in the final laps of the Outlaw Non-Wing feature, Cochran had one final shot in the last corner, but fell short of pulling the pass off and settled for a solid second-place run.
With plenty of history on the line, Cochran has the opportunity to join two elite clubs this week if he can score a second Golden Driller. Another Stock Non-Wing triumph would put him in a group with Donnie Ray Crawford (4) and Frank Flud (2) as the only multi-time SNW champions. By earning his first-career Outlaw Non-Wing victory, Cochran would join Chris Andrews and Trey Marcham as the only drivers to win a Tulsa Shootout title in both of the non-wing divisions.
Beginning on Thursday, December 28th with practice and heat races, the 33rd edition of the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout will run through Sunday, December 31st when a new batch of Golden Driller winners are crowned. Walkapedia will continue our Tulsa Shootout coverage all week long with countless previews leading up to the race as we highlight this year’s contenders.
