Wicker/Carber/McDougal Lead ONW Points, Fuel Fiasco Leads Headlines at Tulsa Shootout

Tulsa, OK (January 3, 2019) – It was a wild and wacky Wednesday inside the Tulsa Expo Raceway as the 34th annual Tulsa Shootout kicked off last night. From the intense on-track action that showcased 30+ Outlaw Non-Wing heat races, to the troubling fuel fiasco that saw five drivers disqualified and then reinstated, the storyline were plenty inside the Expo.

On the track, a slate of 31 Outlaw Non-Wing heat races took the 1/5th-mile surface, offering up a handful of phenomenal finishes and thrilling battles. In the end, Shawn Wicker, who hails from down the road in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, topped the passing points chart and escaped the daunting heats as the initial Outlaw Non-Wing high point man. Charging from seventh-to-first in the ninth heat, Wicker remained calm, cool and collected while methodically advancing forward.

Joining Wicker at the top of the charts was Brian Carber, who maneuvered from seventh-to-first in the 13th heat on track. Carber, from Pipersville, Pennsylvania, delivered arguably the most exciting finish of the night to cap his performance. Tracking down race leader Jordan Herrman, Carber set him up for a last-lap pass and executed it perfectly, railing the high side around Herrman out of turn four to snag the win at the line.

Rounding out the trio of seventh-to-first performances was a familiar face to the Tulsa Shootout. In the 16th heat, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Jason McDougal moved to the front of the field almost immediately, snagging command of the lead before halfway. He ensued to check out and run away with the win in dominating fashion, thus kick starting the defense of his three Golden Driller’s from one year ago on an impressive note.

However, the top storyline in the building and on social media, was that of the fueling. Five drivers, most notably Ryan Greth (Winner of H2) and Dylan Kadous (2nd in H8), were deemed disqualified for the remainder of the event for NOT using the mandatory fuel purchased on-site. Both teams were able to present receipts for the fuel they did in fact purchase on-site and things remained hectic for several hours while the situation was being tended to by officials. With the previously used syringe test going by the wayside, a black light was put in effect this year to test fuel at the top of the ramp following the races.

Speaking with Joe B. Miller, the 2017 Tulsa Shootout Outlaw champion and one of micro racing’s most-respected drivers, he confirmed the test results when he took two different jugs to be tested. The mandatory fuel that he purchased on-site from the fuel track FAILED the test, while a separate jug containing straight methanol had PASSED the test. By the end of the night when official results were released, Greth, Kadous and the others were reinstated and given the finishes they obtained on track, along with all of their passing points.

“The rules need to be enforced, but they also need to be enforced accurately,” said Tulsa Shootout Director, Matt Ward. “We found an error in the test and had to fine tune it. We never want to take anything away from anyone based on a mistake. We are human. It happens,  but we can also fix it. Our apologies to the drivers who were wrongfully disqualified. Once we figured out the issue, we didn’t have any problems from there on.”

Day two of the Tulsa Shootout continues today with 107 races on the docket!
